This picture, taken in the morning light, was a little too dark for my taste as there was an obvious overcast.

I believe you get a better view of the background trees by removing the shadows from the original photo. Just a quick click of the auto contrast button made a very dramatic difference in how vivid the photo could be!
I didn't stop there though, my second image shows how much more effective the photo is once additional adjustments balanced the colors and lighting.

yes - isn't that amazing what a little "enhancement" can do for a photo!
